First sleepover experience.

Posted on March 13, 2015 by Erika Scott

Today I got to experience something new in my parenting journey. Something that I’ve never had to deal with before, because my oldest is only 6. Today was the first time that one of my kids has had someone come sleep over. EEK! My two oldest have gone for a sleepover to their grandparent’s house, but they’ve never gone to sleepover at someone else’s house alone or had someone come over for the night. It’s was all very new to me, and even though Keera’s friend is only 6 I felt very intimidated.thegirlsatthesleepoverIt was decided that Keera’s friend would come over after school, and just get off the bus with Keera. Being a socially-awkward person that I am, I wasn’t sure what to say. I decided I would try the “distant parent” approach, just do my own thing and let them go play in Keera’s room. Unfortunately even though Keera goes to school with her friend, and they play at school she’s cursed with my awkwardness. It being her first sleepover didn’t help either, she wasn’t sure what they should do hoping from activity to activity. I’m happy to report that they figured it out, they played on the mini trampoline that we have in our basement, they played with the toys in the living room, they played in her room, coloured colouring books, etc.

We decided we’d have oven cooked pizza for supper, can’t go wrong with pizza right? The kids ate a whole pizza and a bit of a second one. After supper they went back to playing, and around 7:30pm to my surprise asked if they could put their pj’s on. Party animals right? LOL. Before bed they had a quick snack, then they went to bed at around 9:30ish. Overall it was a very successful 1st sleepover, everyone had a great time. 🙂

Has your child(ren) had their first friend sleepover experience yet? What did you do? How was it? Have you got any tips for me for the next time around?
