Therapy at a standstill.

Posted on August 18, 2015 by Erika Scott

Emilee had an appointment with her Speech therapist today, it’s been a month since her last appointment. {Some back story: Emilee got introduced to therapy because she has Hypermobility Syndrome. It’s caused her to have difficulties with crawling, and walking; she required physiotherapy to aid her to progress. A month ago a speech therapist joined our physiotherapy session to observe Emilee’s speech since I told them I had concerns. Em had started saying about 4 words but she wasn’t really progressing forward. Once the physiotherapy therapist told me Emilee had hit her patch in physio and that there was nothing more they could do for her until they do a review in November. We decided to switch her main therapist from Physio to Speech, and since then she has only said two words. The only word she really still uses is “mama” and usually that’s only when she’s upset.}FotorCreated(1)Can you guess what happened at her appointment? NADA. ZIP. NOTHING. She was babbling and making sounds all this morning, and the whole way to her appointment in the vehicle. Once we got into our usual appointment room, with the same Speech therapist she’s had since the beginning; she just shelled up like a clam. Emilee went the whole hour-long appointment without saying a single word, she didn’t even make any sounds. Her Speech therapist and I sat on the floor interacting with her, using some of the therapy toys. The only response she gave us was some smiles, and the occasional sharing of a toy.therapy(1)After the appointment, I was frustrated so we went outside to enjoy the flowers and the sunny weather. The moment Emilee saw the flowers she was “running” around them laughing and smelling them, completely different behaviour than moments before. Where were theses noises during therapy? I am so frustrated.
