This morning I woke up to find my son in his bed looking so incredibly peaceful. Then suddenly I got smacked in the face by the sad realization that today is his birthday. Where has the time gone? It feels like it just flew by, and I’m scared to blink. Today my little baby boy turns four years old.
(Previously the day before): Z was walking around the house talking about how amazing his birthday would be, that he would get all sorts of presents, and a huge super-hero cake, saying that he’d have a spider-man table-cloth on the table and that we’d all sing him happy birthday. He was completely excited by the idea, and decided to talk about it all day. *Enter B*tch mom* (I wish I was kidding but I’m not): I took Z aside (alone) and I told him that birthdays weren’t all about presents and cake, and that it was about spending time with family and friends. I then told him this year he wouldn’t be getting a cake or presents because we couldn’t afford it. He said “what is a birthday without cake?”, I told him that we would find something much more fun to do instead. With a look that could break anyone’s heart he said “Okay mommy I understand, I love you mom”. YES I have never felt like such a monster in my life, and the fact that he was so accepting of it was even more heartbreaking.
(The day of his birthday): I woke Z up and gave him a big hug and kiss, I wished him Happy Birthday. K came in our room and we both sang Z “Happy Birthday” while Em just stared and babbled away. I explained to the kids that we were going to be going to Toys R Us to go look at toys. First we were going to make a stop at Booster Juice and get some smoothies. The kids love the Funky Monkey flavour[Bananas, chocolate soy-milk & vanilla frozen yogurt], and I’m more of a Mango Hurricane[Mangos, peaches, passion fruit, guava, strawberries, and yogurt] fan… Yes I did Google the ingredients lol.
After we got our smoothies we went to Toys R Us, we rarely ever go there so the kids were very interested to see what toys they had inside. We browsed around and I casually asked Z what he wanted for Christmas, after a while the kids and I went back to the vehicle and my mom stayed behind to grab a couple of things that Z had pointed out. She brought us back home and the kids played while I cleaned up the living room, and my mom ran to go pick up the cake we had ordered for Z’s birthday a couple of days before. The kids decided to go play downstairs, so that gave me enough time to set up the kitchen table with a Spider-Man table-cloth and lay out the wrapped up birthday presents.
When I called the kids to come upstairs, and I seen the look of surprise on Z’s face it was totally worth it. He actually thought that we weren’t going to be celebrating his birthday something I would NEVER do. We got the kids sitting down and we all started to sing Happy Birthday, then Z blew out his candles. He was so happy for the cake, he didn’t even think about presents. He still thought he wasn’t going to be getting any, once we showed him his gifts his level of excitement maxed out.The bubbles and Sponge bob card are a gift from Em and K, the Hulk, and Captain America Shield including the Grover card are from me. And last but not least the Avengers chair, and Avengers singing card [which was Z’s favourite card] was from mémé. Overall it was an awesome day, and Z was so happy about how his birthday went and that’s all that matters to me!
