This Halloween with Covid running around, and the threat of a second wave according to the media. I wasn’t sure how Halloween was going to go down. Halloween might be a bust… but the least I can do is decorate the outside of our home and make it a bit more spooky.
I’m on a budget of sorts… you know that one income lifestyle. I knew I had to be creative because I’m not buying expensive decorations. That’s why I spent hours browsing the web for affordable DIY ideas. There’s so many different ideas out there, that goes from beginner DIY to expert DIYer.
I’ve always been a very creative person. My mind races a mile a minute all day long with thoughts and ideas. I’m one of those people whose brain has 19 browser tabs opened. 3 are frozen, and I have no idea where the music is coming from. I’ve always got these awesome elaborate plans, but there usually beyond my DIY skill set.
As most people do I have a Pinterest account. That’s where I get a lot of my ideas from, as well as old fashion Google. I’ll only go on the Pinterest app every couple of days. I’ve set these restrictions for myself and disabled the notifications from the app on my phone because it’s addicting.
Every single time I go on that app I fall down a rabbit hole of fantastic content. There’s so much great stuff! That’s actually where I found the inspiration for a lot of my Halloween projects… Even if I didn’t do most of them, but I can always do more next year 🙂
First up on the list was a hanging cage!
But first, meet Halloween Fred, our new hand.
The inspiration was –> Hanging Cage Halloween Prop. I’ll admit that I didn’t follow their directions, and I kinda winged it to make it my own
Thinking outside the box…You know?
Complete disclosure here… I bought the hanging corpse at Walmart!
Things you’ll need for this project are:
- 2 white laundry baskets. (Dollarama 3.50$ each)
- 2 Black spray paint cans (Canadian Tire 6.99$ each)
- 1 blood-red spray paint can (we had some around the house)
- Disposable gloves (we had some around the house, but any grocery store)
- Black reusable zip-ties (Canadian Tire)
- Scissors
- Some spooky things to put in your cage and extra props (Dollarama)
- Black shepherd hook (Walmart 7$)
This project is pretty straightforward but you should learn from my mistakes! Before you go spray painting your baskets black cut the laundry baskets! Then spray paint the baskets outside 2 coats, and inside 2 coats till your satisfied with how they look.
This was my first DIY hanging cage attempt…
So this was my first attempt at making the hanging cage… it doesn’t look half bad but let’s be honest it looks like two laundry baskets zip-tied to each other. I envisioned that the dog would be “floating” because he’s dead and I was going to buy some glow in the dark paint so that it would glow.
Kennedy my two year old had other plans…
As you can see Kennedy adores the animal skeletons, so being able to paint them all and set them out for Halloween wasn’t going to fly according to her.
Ultimately I ended up “sacrificing” the big owl for the Halloween cage because Kennedy liked the dog one and the little owl the best.
The end results it’s looks more cage-like.
I had another Halloween DIY idea but I wasn’t able to get it done unfortunately due to last-minute planning, however, if I’m able to get myself a free pallet it’s high up on the list to display next year! Anywhos if you can get your hands on a pallet, paint it red or black or leave it as is if it’s NOT blue. Either raise it up or dig it into the ground a bit, buy yourself some hands to stick out of it and put some red lights. You’ll get a nice creepy vibe. 🙂 I’ll add a picture when I get mine done!
