Say it with me…Homeschooling. Yup, we’re taking the leap we’ll be homeschooling all three big kids as of September. It’s definitely something that’s completely out of our
The discussion started around February, I had mentioned some personal stuff to Zaden’s caseworker about some issues with the school. I’m not pointing fingers, but we had many difficulties over the last two years. Problems with the school, certain staff members, and even members of the school board.
Zaden’s Mémé and I had meetings with Zaden’s teachers, a school board counsellor, the principal of the school and even a few members of the actual school board. An IPP plan had been typed up by the school, but not everything on the IPP plan was being followed, etc. Despite our attempts the situation wasn’t changing, everyone was unhappy causing Zaden to act out even more.
However, that’s another story for another day.
My mom and I looked at other schools, trying to figure out where would be best fit for the kids to attend. I wasn’t thrilled with the schools that were available, and every school that seemed like a perfect fit was a private school. That wanted thousands of dollars, every single year.
NOPE. That’s not going to work on this single mama’s income.
The more my mom and I talked the clearer it became, we were going to home-school starting in September. This wasn’t a slap together idea, I knew it would be hard work. Keera’s going to be starting grade 6, Zaden’s starting grade 3, and Emilee’s going to be starting grade 1. As challenging as it will be I really think this is is what will work best for our family at least for now.
I’ll let you know how we feel about homeschooling, the good and the ugly at the end of the school year.
Since it’s going to be our first year at homeschooling, I didn’t want to jump into the ocean without thinking. So instead of making our own curriculum from scratch, we made the decision to do the parent/teacher-directed program.
That way there’s more structure, as the teachers expect the kids to submit certain envelope assignments at least once every two weeks. Once the kid’s assignments have been submitted the teacher will
It’s actually quite cool.
It’s important to me that the kids learn the school curriculum, but I also want them to learn life things. I’m a big believer that there’s more to life and knowledge than just textbooks, and classrooms to learn. That’s where my mom and I come in, we fill the holes with knowledge about other things, that aren’t taught in the curriculum. Such as culture, travel, day to day life skills, really anything we see fit.
Now I’m excited and looking forward to moving out of our apartment so that we can have a designated homeschooling learning area, that isn’t at the kitchen table. There are so many options, and a few months ago I managed to find some good ideas at Ikea that won’t work until we move and have more space. It’s going to be a one step at a time situation, and I really need to learn to have patience and wait for everything to unfold in the proper time.
Do you home-school? If not why not? If you do, why do you homeschool? Do you have any words of advice?
