I believe that cooking and baking, is something that should be taught at a young age. It’s an important life skill, because living off only Kraft dinner and hotdogs isn’t something I want for my kids.
Although to be honest, Kraft dinner and hotdogs is a pretty good dish on occasion.
Don’t judge.
So a few months ago during my break at work, I went to check out what types of cooking classes Superstore offers. The options seemed pretty reasonable, and I decided to check the availability online.
I googled Real Canadian Superstore Cooking School Calgary, if you click HERE you can change your city location to see what’s available.
I was easily able to book a cooking class, for Keera and Zaden because of their age. Since they are older, I didn’t have to go to the class with them. Another thing that simplified the process is that they don’t have allergies.
They both went to cooking class together, and ended up having a really great time.
I wasn’t able to get Emilee into a class until a few days ago, because it’s NOT a nut free zone. Since she’s got an allergy, I had to make sure to pick a class that would be making nut-free foods.
I managed to find and book a class, it required a few months of waiting though. Since I was only willing to book a class, at the Superstore near us.
The timing was perfect though, for several reasons;
- Keera and Zaden are at school, and Emilee and I needed something to do during the day.
- Emilee and I got to, get out of the apartment and do something fun together!
- Halloween is soon, and we learnt how to make a few cute Halloween themed treats.
I was unsure what to expect, in the cooking class.
As soon as we got there, the instructor gave Emilee a chef hat to write her name on. The instructor then gave Emilee a small adorable apron to wear (cute Christmas gift idea I think!) I was thinking of getting Emilee this one for Christmas.
I already bought Zaden one that I’m planning on giving him for Christmas. It’s a blue apron, that comes with a chef baker hat. I had bought it in a bulk order from Amazon.com a few months back and paid 35-40$ for the combo set.
The price listed below is NOT the price I paid for Zaden’s apron. Although while browsing on the Amazon.ca website, I was able to find another cute “boyish” apron. The apron is red, but it’s reasonably priced.
Emilee and I picked a spot to sit down, and waited as the instructor handed out platters for the dip we ended up making. The class was packed, so there was 4 kids + the parents per dip dish. The kids each took turns scooping beans/flattening them.
There was the occasional time, when we each had to help our child do something since it was more “advanced.”During this class we made Web Chip Dip, CLICK HERE. Then while we waited for that to bake, we made some white chocolate Strawberry Ghosts.Making the white chocolate strawberry ghosts, was so easy. We dipped some fresh strawberries into some white chocolate, then attempted to make ghost tails. Afterwards we added some mini chocolate chips on for the eyes. The instructor put the strawberries into the freezer quickly to freeze them so that the chocolate would harden. Once the cheese had finished melting on everyone’s chip dips, we started to eat. The kids each got a cup of apple juice, and their munchies.
Everyone enjoyed the chips, and dip. We just weren’t allowed any ghost strawberries, since the kids made 3 strawberry ghosts each. All the kids ate all of their ghosts, Emilee was the only one that offered to share.
Emilee gave me one of her strawberry ghosts. Yes proud mama moment.
We will definitely be going back for another cooking class, we had so much fun and learnt something new.
