We got invited to go for supper at the acreage tonight. We ate some BBQed burgers and hot dogs, and even some corn on the cob. It was refreshing to get out of the city for the evening, and breath in some semi-clean air. As I sat down by the fire pit on a lawn chair, I watched the kids running around the yard playing; I watched the horses grazing the grass in the field. I got a paining reminder of just how much I miss living out in the country. It’s been more than several years since I’ve lived in the country, and as much as I have come to enjoy the airplane noises that go above my house at night. I miss being able to go outside, and look up at the dark sky filled with too many twinkling stars to count. I miss the relaxing feeling you get from sitting outside, and just enjoying natures sounds. That incredible feeling you get when you can sit by the fire and listen to music. Being able to be as loud as you want, without having to worry about disrupting your neighbors. The biggest thing I miss about living on an acreage, is being able to have so many different types of animals. Throughout my late childhood/early teen years we had usually 3 dogs, several cats, some horses, turkeys, a couple of roosters, and some chickens. At one point I remember us having a calf that we bottle fed, some wild rabbits, two sheep (they didn’t last long), some ducks and geese. You don’t even realize how cool it is to be able to have your own farm fresh eggs every morning, until you don’t have that anymore. You can’t have chickens in the city… that I know of, I’ll have to check into that. Bottom line, the city and the country both have there pros and cons… it’s just nice to be able to escape either one once in a while.
