Tonight I was reading Keera and Zaden one of the books that Keera brought from her school library. She attends a French school and they do have a couple of English books in the library, but most of them are in French. One of the books that she chose was “Rapunzel” but it was in french “Raiponce”. Here’s where the problem is, I can understand french perfectly, I can read it perfectly (quietly in my head). When it comes to reading it out loud and speaking it I can do that as well, but after last night I got a serious reality check at just how much I need to practice on my french reading and speaking. Some simple words that I could pronounce in my head and that I understood I had difficulty reading out-loud to Keera and Zaden.
I’m glad that the teacher encourages Keera to bring only french books home, I know that her and I could definitely use the practice! I think that we need to step up and start speaking more french in our house too. The less you speak your language, the harder it is for you to keep it up. I should also pull out our french books, now that Keera’s old enough to sit for a longer story. I can start reading the little French books (50 pages or so).
